Travel To and Around Melbourne

Posted by [email protected] on January 22, 2020 at 6:55 AM Comments comments (0)

To get around and roam in Melbourne, trains, trams and buses are easy way to see all of the city’s best attractions, theatres, restaurants, bars, sporting venues and shopping precincts. All you need is a Myki card which is a smartcard. With Myki card you are not required to buy ticket. You can take The City Circle Tram without any charges as it is free but you have to pay for Skybus, to and from Melbourne Airport as Myki card doesn’t work for it.

Myki cards –

Myki is Melbourne's ticket to travel on the city's trains, trams and buses , which costs A$6 for adults and $3 for children, concession card holders and Australian seniors. But the cost of this card is non -refundable. It's a plastic smartcard which when purchased, it needs to be "loaded" with stored value "Myki Money" which can be topped up and re-used again. You can also purchase it online on PTV website, premium train stations, retail outlets displaying the myki sign (including 7-Elevens), or by calling 1800 800 007 (free from a land line) in Australia.

Myki explorer-

You can also buy a Myki explorer pack from Melbourne Visitor Centre, Federation Square, the PTV Hub at Southern Cross Station (corner Swanston and Little Collins streets), SkyBus terminals and some hotels. The pack includes a Myki smartcard, pre-loaded with A$8 of stored value "Myki Money", a public transport map, information on how to use Myki and discount offers at 15 attractions including Melbourne Aquarium, the National Sports Museum, Eureka Skydeck and Puffing Billy, which may save each visitor more than $130 which will help you in flexible travel experience!

Trains –

Melbourne has metro train system which takes a city loop between the outer suburbs and Flinders Street Station in the city. Southern Cross Station, Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, Parliament and Flinders Street are the 5 stations on which metro stops where Southern Cross Station is Melbourne's hub for regional and interstate trains.

Trams-

Just hop on and off, using your Myki smartcard to “touch on" and "touch off", you can use Trams (Street-Cars). They are a well-loved feature of the city and are very easy to use. You can see route numbers which are displayed on the front of the tram and take your tram accordingly. Travel within the central area of Melbourne by tram is free only if you have myki card along with you. While fares are not based directly on distance travelled but (largely) on time taken, it depends on which zone you are taking. Generally there are two Fare Zones (Inner Zone 1 and Outer Zone 2). For a suggestion, travel in zone 2 as it is cheaper!

Buses –

All the major hubs such as shopping centres, leisure, hospitals, schools, sports venues, and some of Melbourne's biggest attractions are covered by buses too. Nowadays "night network" on selected train, tram and bus routes are also available that runs in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Regional Victoria –

Across the state, V/Line or Victoria's regional train and bus are operated. It is for people travelling further afield, Victoria's V/Line service gives access to regional towns and scenic attractions across the state along with timetables, maps and other information.

Taxi and rideshare –

In Melbourne taxis are easy to spot, as they are mostly painted yellow, silver or white which can be seen tracked. Melbourne is a motorised suburban metropolis so Traffic congestion can be irritating and it does delay public transport, especially trams. Because of this reason many residents prefer to travel by car. The taxi is generally unoccupied and easily available for hire. Also you can use Uber app which is quite famous in Melbourne which will give you all the details regarding fare estimate, vehicle details, the driver's picture, and tracks the trip on a map.
